For much of the 1980's, the battles were between Bronx and Manhattan groups within the wing, and the New York rivalry with New Jersey wing developed at the same time. In 1993, and continuing until 2001, NY Wing did not field a team at region competition.
A remarkable fact about the FLG team is it was the first non-NY City (Bronx, Queens or Manhattan) team in 22 years (since 1979) to represent the wing at Region competition, first non-NYC team to win NCC (and win more than once) and only the second to win on their first visit. Take a look at the complete history below...

2 - The Bronx Group Drill Team was the first non-chartered unit (i.e. not a squadron/group/wing) in CAP history to receive a Unit Citation for their National Championship in 1981. They later earned a total of 5 Unit Citations for their 5 Championships.
3 - Finger Lakes Group is the first non-NY City group in NY Wing history to compete at Northeast Region back to back. They are also the first non-NY City group to win at the NCC, and only the second to do so on their first try (joining the 1980 Bronx team).
