MEMORANDUM FOR Grp CC Grp CP Cadet or Composite Sq CC Any Cadet interested in applying for encampment staff FROM: NYWG/CPAN 817 Stewart Avenue (Rear) Garden City, NY 11530-4856 SUBJECT: Cadet Staff Selection 1. The encampment cadet staff selection is changing this year to a more formal process. This memo is to set the expectations for staff selection this year. This memo applies to cadets applying for staff positions other than cadet command staff (CC, DCC, XO, 1st Sgt). A separate memo will address the cadet command staff application procedure. 2. There will be two weekend activities specifically for encampment cadet staff to attend. The first weekend (or one day event- will be determined later) is the staff selection exercise. The second weekend is the traditional staff skills workshop. Neither activity is required, however have an immeasurable impact on the cadet. Approximate cost for each would be a maximum of $25 each activity, not including travel. The selection weekend/ workshop is a great opportunity for applicants (especially first time applicants) to "put a face to a name". 3. The staff selection weekend will test the applicants' knowledge in various areas, as well as measure their abilities to perform the duties of an encampment staff member. There will be interviews, written tests and evaluations performed, tailored to each position available. For example, an applicant for communications staff will be tested on their knowledge of communication procedures and paperwork, or an applicant for flight staff will be tested on drill and general knowledge. All staff members will be evaluated on their professionalism (to include customs and courtesies), leadership ability and uniform wear. Scores will be compiled with the results of the interview process and a decision made after the selection weekend/workshop. 4. These new tests and evaluations are merely a formalization of the selection process. Cadets are not expected to know the jobs they are applying for; learning them is one reason for attending encampments. However, having any related skills, ability or knowledge ahead of time will work to an applicant's advantage. The intent of the tests are to gauge an applicant's ability and interest. Specific criteria for each staff position will be posted on this webpage, as well as included hard copy with this memorandum (for squadron mailings). 5. Cadets may augment their skill set by attending the NY Wing Leadership Workshop, which teaches some junior and senior NCO-level leadership skills that can be used at encampment or the home unit. The workshop is tentatively planned to be held in three locations around the state on a Saturday (date TBD) early spring, and is open to anyone to attend. A separate memorandum will detail the leadership workshop. 6. Every cadet will have access to appropriate materials to prepare, and provisions will be made for those who cannot attend the workshops/weekends. We (cadet programs) understand attending an additional weekend is asking a lot of volunteers, so we will do our best to accommodate. Every effort will be made to minimize the time and financial impact of this new program. If you have any questions, email me at val_n_andy@hotmail.com. Andrew J. Welsh, Capt., CAP NYW Ast.
